Portrait of Santiago Rusiñol i Prats

Santiago Rusiñol i Prats, a leader of Catalan modernisme, wrote novels and plays as well as painting, and from 1893 kept a studio in Sitges, where modernist festivals drew artists, writers and musicians.

From 1889 he studied in Paris, living there on and off for ten years. In The kitchens of the Moulin de la Galette, of 1890–91, a woman in black sits on the steps of an open kitchen, with pans and steam to the right and bare trees outside. La Morphine, from 1894, shows a young woman lying back in bed, one hand gripping the sheet.

He painted Patio in Sitges on one of his earliest visits to the town, c. 1892–94: potted plants stand against pink walls in hard sun. In Blue Courtyard, from 1913, deep blue walls rise from pink earth and a goldfish bowl sits on a ledge. Old Faun, of 1911, looks across a clipped hedge maze to a statue in the middle. Nearly all the works below are paintings, of people, landscapes and towns. He stayed close to the painter Ramon Casas until his death.
