Of the Skagen Painters, only Anna Ancher was born and raised in Skagen, and she liked best to paint its people in everyday scenes, mostly women and often indoors.
The window does half the painting in Sunlight in the Blue Room, from 1891: it lays two pale blocks of sun on a deep blue wall, with potted plants in shadow inside them, while a fair-haired girl bends over her handwork in the glare. Eighteen years on, Ancher painted her own mother, Ane Brøndum, reading in a red room, the sunlit blue room behind her.
Her first exhibited picture showed two poor Skagen characters, Per and Stine Bollerhus, walking home from church; years later she went to Stine's funeral and painted A Funeral. Mourners in black and dark blue fill the low room around a coffin heaped with wreaths, and none of them meets our eye. Grief, from 1902, is barer: a naked young woman with long fair hair and an old woman in black kneel on either side of a tall grave cross.
