Portrait of Orazio Gentileschi: Portrait of Orazio Gentileschi

Orazio Gentileschi, from Pisa, came under Caravaggio's influence after 1600, then worked in Genoa and Paris and spent his last years at the court of Charles I in London.

He moved to Rome in 1576 or 1578 and took the surname of the uncle he lived with. Much of his early work there meant painting the figures in other artists' decorative schemes. He reached Genoa in 1621, Marie de' Medici's court in Paris in 1624 and England in 1626; after the Duke of Buckingham's murder in 1628 all his commissions came from the royal family.

Danaë, c. 1623, was painted from a model brought close to the picture's front: she reaches toward gold coins falling from the dark. In the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, light slants across a cracked wall above Joseph, asleep against a bundle, as Mary nurses the Child. His English pictures are more elegant and restrained than before. In The Finding of Moses, of 1633, a princess in gold silk points at the baby as a kneeling woman lifts his basket.
