Large, solid boulders and sheer cliffs frame a slight opening at the end of a gorge, where dark silhouetted trees meet the pale sky. The darkness brings into contrast the central bright green birch tree. While the narrow canyon is mostly submerged in shadow, flickers of white light make their way through, dappling the streambed and outlining the tree trunks. Tiny blue and yellow flowers freckle the moss and weeds on either side of the rock pathway in the foreground, adding small touches of color to this nearly monochromatic view.
From studying and sketching nature for many years, Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin had the ability to invent his own landscapes; this scene, though realistic, is not based on any one place and was imagined in order to convey an atmosphere or mood. It contains no humans or animals, nor any religious or mythological references that might suggest a narrative. Instead, Böcklin used his powers of composition, light, and color to evoke a calm but slightly foreboding moment in this hidden ravine. Subsequent artists who explored enigmatic and mystical ideas and aesthetics, namely the Symbolists in the 1890s and Surrealists in the 1920s, found an inspiring precursor in Böcklin.
